“You’re nothing but a second-rate, trying hard copycat.”
Remember that classic line of Cherrie Gil to Sharon Cuneta? (Ooops. I might have lost all my young audience there. But I sure gave a quick smile from those in their 40s and above.)
Nobody likes a “gaya-gaya” or someone who simply imitates. We want to be original, distinct, unique, one of a kind, different!
Yet, think about it. Is there really such a thing as original?
I’m an artist. I want to believe I “create” original things. But really now, I’ve long admitted that creating something purely original is a fallacy – a delusion. I write songs, poems, do skits, productions, concepts, etc. But they aren’t purely original. At best, they’re modifications of something I must have heard, listened to, watched, read about, or learned from someone.
Here is the plain truth: ONLY GOD IS ORIGINAL. Everything else is a modification of, or inspired by, what has already been created. In fact, a philosophy professor of mine in college told me, “being original simply means going back to origins”.
As a teacher, I should know. IMITATION is the Mother of All Learning! How did you learn your ABCs and 1-2-3s? Didn’t you first simply imitate your Mom or your teacher?
And there’s nothing wrong with that – until you learn by yourself, and start creating your own ideas, and eventually your own identity, but surely building on what you first imitated.
In fact, the Bible says we should be IMITATORS!
“Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us…” Ephesians 5: 1-2
The important questions are: WHAT are you IMITATING? WHO are you IMITATING?
As we go for our BEST YEAR EVER, we go IMITATING CHRIST – and I’m sure He would be very, very happy to call you “Gaya-Gaya”.
